Because the Java platform varies too much across different platforms, I have divided this site first by platform, then by browser. Needless to say, this is very icky, indeed. Fortunately, JDK 1.2 strives to solve these problems; unfortunately, 1.2 only exists on Win32 and Solaris!

Select installation instructions: Windows NT | Windows 95/98 | Macintosh
If you get Java 1.2 and have a Windows or Solaris machine, you can also get Java3D. Read these instructions.
Then, look below to proceed.

Java 1.1 -- Use these links UNLESS you know the specific version of Java your Java platform supports!

Java 1.2 with 3D enhancements

Installation for Windows 95/98

Get the proper Java platform:
- Netscape: You must have version 4.05 or up.
- Internet Explorer: You must have version 4.0 or up. Win98 already has the proper version.
- JDK 1.1: You must have version 1.1.2 or up.
- HotJava: You must have version 1.1 or up.
- Java Plugin: The Java Plugin lets you add any Java platform to your browser, regardless of version! The tradeoff, of course, is that you must use a special version of the page to get at the plugin.
Get the SwingSet. Period99 requires version 1.1 or up (techies: it uses javax.swing.* packages)
- Don't bother with the huge 10MB download from JavaSoft; we have the one JAR you need for Swing 1.1 here. Rename the file from .zip to .jar if you like.
Configure the SwingSet:
- Access my JAR Install Wizard to learn how to install swingall.zip here.
Restart the computer and come back to this page.

Installation for Windows NT

Installation instructions are the same as for Win95/98, with one glaring exception: To add/change classpath, start the Control Panel, select System, click the Environment tab and, in the User Variables section, examine the CLASSPATH variable.

Installation for Macintosh

Get the proper Java platform:
- Netscape: Unfortunately, Netscape/Mac still does not fully support Java 1.1. Thus, you can't use Netscape.
- Internet Explorer: You must have version 4.0 or up.
- MacOS Runtime for Java: You must have version 2.1 or up.

Installation of Java3D

First, get Java3D from JavaSoft through this link here. Then run the installer and go back to this page. Note that you MUST have Java 1.2 and for now Java3D only runs on Windows and Solaris.
